Walking & Hiking

The start of the tourist path up Ben Nevis and looking acrtoss into Glen NevisSpean Bridge in on the doorstep of some of the finest walking, trekking and hiking available in the whole of the United Kingdom. With a plethora of Munro’s, Corbett’s and much easier trails through the Glens available, it’s not hard to see why over 1m tourists visit the region and partake in some sort of walking activity every year. Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK is the obvious attraction and the majority of trail heads are just a short drive or cycle from the house. That said, there are many more beautiful walks around including the West Highland Way, Glen Nevis to Steall Falls and along the Caledonian Canal.

At Tirindirsh House B&B we have loads of Track to Ben Nevis from Achinteeinformation, maps and guide books along with some personal experience of where you will find the best walk to suit your abilities. Some walks & hikes offer jaw dropping scenery and the odd hill which will leave you out of breath….some are far more serious and have real elements of remoteness & danger, for these we take all details of who is attempting the more serious walks so their return can be anticipated and monitored.

Great Glen Way & Ben Nevis

Nevis range view from Tirindrish Nevis RangeThe Great Glen Way is one of the most enjoyable and beautiful multi day walks available in the Highlands. Opened in 2002 and forms one of the four long distance routes available, this great walk generally starts at the Old Fort in Fort William and finishes in Inverness. The walk has some fantastic natural stops along the way with most people taking either five or six days to complete. The walk can also be cycled and generally takes two to three days. It is a total of 79 miles long and follows the Caledonian Canal, Loch Lochy, around Loch Oich and eventually along Loch Ness.

Tirindirsh House B&B is just three miles from Gairlochy which is normally the first stopping point along the route. We have many guests stay with us that are either cycling or walking the route and we can help with baggage collection, bike storage or lifts to and from the starting point.

Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis walkerBen Nevis, standing 1,345 metres above sea level is the highest mountain in the British Isles. This is one, if not the most popular walks taken in the highlands of Scotland. A steep accent and rough terrain, this mountain attracts around 125,000 complete accents and 100,000 partial accents each year. Many people who walk Ben Nevis do so by using the old ‘pony track’ which starts on the south side of the mountain in Glen Nevis. Here there is a visitor centre and a car park. A little farther, close to the very start of the track on the hill side is the Ben Nevis Inn, a great pub and a popular haunt of those that have just completed the climb. Proper climbing can be found on the north face but this is for experienced climbers only.

The Nevis Range from TirindrishThis is a mountain not to be taken lightly and proper walking equipment should be taken along with you. Essentials include plenty of water, warm clothing & waterproofs (Ben Nevis has ten times the rainfall of London) along with a compass, a map of the mountain and a fully charged mobile phone.

Tirindrish House is conveniently situated just a short 10/15 minute drive from Ben Nevis and is a popular and more importantly comfortable place to stay before and after your walk. We can arrange early breakfasts if required, packed lunches and lifts if required.
